Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in 882 Days
19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been achieved on hard surfaces
A revitalized Medvedev won his first championship for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.
The Russian, a former number one, has had a challenging season, achieving just one win at the big events and suffering a setback at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serving in particular - resulted in him exiting of the world's top 10 and finally separating with long-term trainer Cervara.
Presently collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has steadily progressed in the last few weeks - peaking in a tightly fought competitive victory over Frenchman Moutet.
This marks his initial title after the Rome competition and maiden on a hard surface from spring of that year.
The win also signifies the Russian has achieved 21 titles at twenty-one distinct competitions.
"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my both daughters simultaneously, so to win a championship is really nice," said tennis professional Medvedev.
"This championship is in dedication of my child my daughter, because the first title I got when my child her name was delivered was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six finals, including in the German tournament previously this season.
The player's counter-punching strategy and regular emotional displays on court had prompted observers to doubt if his ability to perform at the highest level was over.
Yet the athlete has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and compete aggressively, backed up by an better serve.
Medvedev came back from a deficit in the first set against the tricky opponent, securing four of the concluding five games to take the lead.
Both players traded breaks in the middle set before the challenger, striving for his first professional victory, seized the initiative to push for a decider.
The opponent saved 4 initial break points in a close deciding set before the champion secured a break to that score to serve for the match.
Suitably, Medvedev earned the title with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to manage a return after a lengthy match.
