The Princess of Wales's Annual Christmas Carol Concert Honours Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will listen to a selection of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Love and Generosity

The focus of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own steady comeback to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Performance and Potential

Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists supported by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to musical tuition.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the charity, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at tonight's service.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," she stated. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will include nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for community pantries.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on television on December 24th.
